Synopsis Queen of Canton ()

Ching Shih is a true figure who is believed to have begun her career as a female prostitute in southern China and who later became the most successful pirate in the history of the world. She was born in the mid to late 1700s and eventually married a pirate captain; after his death, she grew the business to become the most successful pirate in the history of the world with over 22,000 pirates under her command. Some believe that, after her husband's death, she married his son. The Chinese government of the time, rulers of the Ching Dynasty, were unable to defeat Ching Shih, even with the assistance of European countries, which assistance included support by Portugal's navy. Ching Shih ruled the China Seas, collecting vast amounts of tribute, until she entered into a treaty with the Chinese government in 1803. She allegedly lived the rest of her life in peaceful retirement. Those who have seen the Pirates of the Caribbean movies starring Johnny Depp may remember a short scene in one of the movies showing a meeting of pirates from around the world conversing at a conference table; the pirate in traditional Chinese dress likely was supposed to represent Ching Shih, the most renowned and successful pirate ever!
